چکیده

We present algorithms for computing all placements of two and three fingers that cage a given polygonal object with n edges in the plane. A polygon is caged when it is impossible to take the polygon to infinity without penetrating one of the fingers. Using a classification into squeezing and stretching cagings, we provide an algorithm that reports all caging placements of two disc fingers in O(n log n) time. Our result extends and improves a recent solution for point fingers. In addition, we construct a data structure requiring O(n) storage that can answer in O(log n) whether two fingers in a query placement cage the polygon. We also study caging with three point fingers. Given the placements of two so-called base fingers, we report all placements of the third finger so that the three fingers jointly cage the polygon. Using the fact that the boundary of the set of placements for the third finger consists of equilibrium grasps, we present an algorithm that reports all placements of the third finger in O(n log n) deterministic time and O(n log n(log log n)) expected time. Our results extend previous solutions that only apply to convex polygons.

On the complexity of the set of three-finger caging grasps of convex polygons

We study three-finger caging grasps of convex polygons. A part is caged with a number of fingers when it is impossible to rigidly move the part to an arbitrary placement far from its initial placement without penetrating any finger. A convex polygon with n vertices and a placement of two fingers —referred to as the base fingers— are given. The caging region is the set of all placements of the t...

Geometry-Based Manipulation through Robotic Caging

Caging is a method to confine object configurations by a closed region made by robot bodies. It can be used as a substitute for or a complement to conventional grasping in robotic manipulation. Because caging is a geometrical concept, manipulation via caging falls into a class of “geometry-based manipulation.” Geometry-based manipulation can be performed by position-controlled robots according ...

Evaluation of quality of partial caging by a planar two-fingered hand

In partial caging, an object is partially constrained by robots and is able to escape from there. Although complete caging ensures the hand never releases the confined object, insufficient degrees of freedom of robots does not often satisfy the conditions for caging. Partial caging, however, can be accomplished even by robots having such mechanical restriction. We consider a case that an object...

Caging 2D bodies by 1-parameter two-fingered gripping systems

This paper is concerned with the following caging problem. W e wish t o surround an object B by a multifingered hand such that B has some freedom t o move but still cannot escape the “cage” formed by the fingers. W e introduce a new notion of caging set, which is based on the configuration-space representation of the f ree motions of the hand-system with respect to 8. Using stratif ied Morse th...

Caging Planar Bodies by One-Parameter Two-Fingered Gripping Systems

This paper is concerned with a caging problem: we wish to surround an object B by a multifingered hand such that B has some freedom to move, but still cannot escape the “cage” formed by the fingers. We introduce a new notion of the caging set, which is based on the configuration-space representation of the free motions of the hand system with respect to the object. Using stratified Morse theory...
